Frequently Asked Questions
On the Seine, immediately beside the town centre. Quay, collegiate church and old streets all sit within a few hundred metres, and Giverny is five kilometres away. It is one of the most compact calls on the Normandy route.
Three ways: the ship's organised excursion, by bicycle along a pleasant path beside the Seine, or on foot for strong walkers. Five kilometres separate the quay from Monet's house, making it one of the shortest excursions of the cruise.
The pink house with green shutters where Claude Monet spent his last forty-three years, still furnished as it was, with its yellow dining room and Japanese print collection. Outside lie the Clos Normand and the water garden the painter dug himself: the lily pond, the willows and the Japanese bridge he painted hundreds of times.

Yes, and it would be a shame to reduce the call to the painting pilgrimage. Founded in the 9th century, the town has a carefully restored old centre around the flamboyant Gothic façade of Notre-Dame collegiate church, with many half-timbered houses, including the Maison du Temps Jadis that now houses the tourist office.
A half-timbered mill balanced on the piers of a vanished medieval bridge over the Seine. It is the town's signature image. You do not go inside: you photograph it from the Pont Clemenceau or from the right bank.
The Vernon museum, in a private mansion, holds a few Monet canvases along with works by Bonnard, a modest but well-chosen collection. Bizy castle, two kilometres from the centre, opens its 18th-century furnished rooms and a park with waterworks inspired by Versailles. The Museum of Impressionisms, at Giverny itself, rounds out the garden visit.
Vernon's centre, yes: flat ground and short distances from the quay. Giverny needs more thought, with gravel garden paths and narrow passages at busy hours. The coach excursion remains the safest option for anyone who walks with difficulty.
The euro, cards accepted everywhere. For a meal, the terraces on the collegiate church square serve Normandy without fuss: local cheese and cider on the menu. It is an easy pause to slot between morning gardens and the return aboard.
