Start with the Illusuak Cultural Centre, then walk through the community and stop at the Moravian church. Illusuak tells the history, language and art of the Nunatsiavut Inuit through testimony, objects and film.
Nunatsiavut is the self-governing territory of the Labrador Inuit, administered by them since 2005 — a first in Atlantic Canada. Nain is its administrative centre and the northernmost community in Labrador.
A brass band. Moravian missionaries, who arrived in 1771, left this tradition behind, and the musicians sometimes greet arriving ships with hymns played facing the sea.
Inuttitut is still spoken daily, and English is understood and used everywhere. French is not common on this coast.
