A short distance from the towers of the Baba Vida fortress. Few river calls open so directly: you reach the citadel by following the riverside park.
Bulgaria's best-preserved medieval fortress, standing guard on the Danube since the tenth century. Its name, "Grandmother Vida", comes from a legend: Vida, eldest daughter of a local lord, is said to have built the castle to withdraw into and never left it.
Allow an hour to walk it without rushing, more if the viewpoints hold you. Past the moat, the inner courtyards open one after another: thick walls, stone stairs, wall walks from which the eye runs out over the river and the great suspension bridge to Romania.
Baba Vida and the historic centre are entirely walkable in half a day: the Kaleto gates, the mosque and library of Osman Pazvantoglu, the Saint Dimitri cathedral and the restored synagogue. The Belogradchik excursion takes whatever time remains.
The fortified Kaleto gates, including the Stamboul gate, which still mark the old entrances to the Ottoman town. Nearby, the mosque and library raised in the early nineteenth century by Osman Pazvantoglu, a rebel governor turned master of the region, stand beside the cross-shaped barracks housing the local history collections.
An 1894 building, long the country's second largest, carefully restored. It now lives as a cultural centre dedicated to Jules Pascin, the School of Paris painter born in Vidin, and hosts exhibitions and concerts through the year.
Towers of red sandstone carved by erosion into the shapes of giants and animals, some fifty kilometres inland. They frame a fortress built into the cliff itself; it is the region's most spectacular attraction.
Half a day, with the drive crossing the hills of northwestern Bulgaria. Bring sturdy shoes: the laid-out paths between the blocks climb in stages to sweeping views over the plain.
The large Orthodox cathedral completed in 1885, whose broad dome and frescoes are worth pushing open the door for. It continues the story of the neighbouring Ottoman buildings and turns the walk into an open-air history lesson.
A shaded promenade where locals come to walk, fish or sit at floating restaurants. Lines are cast from morning to evening, and the benches facing the current never stay free for long.
