Well before dawn, barges loaded with rice line up, position lights on, and the canal comes alive like a water highway. Cho Gao, whose name means "rice market," designates both a locality in the Mekong Delta and the waterway connecting Ho Chi Minh City's navigable network to the river arm that bathes My Tho. For river ships descending south, this passage constitutes an experience in itself, an unbroken procession of Vietnamese boatlife.

The crossing generally takes place early in the voyage, in the first hours of the cruise. Many passengers settle on deck at dawn, and they are rewarded: the narrow canal brings the spectacle within earshot.

The Great Cargo Procession

Here circulate each day hundreds of working boats: rice barges sunk to the rail, sand dredgers, coconut convoys, tank boats. Eyes are painted on both sides of the bows, a tradition meant to ward off evil spirits from the waters. Crews live aboard, and you catch a thousand domestic scenes: laundry snapping in the wind, morning soup on a burner, children waving at passing ships. Each wave returned triggers smiles from bank to bank, and cameras do not know where to point.

The Banks: A Continuous Theatre

On both sides of the channel, houses on pilings, family landings, groves and rice paddies succeed one another without break. Tin roofs alternate with coconut fronds, a suspension bridge passes above the masts, a riverside market spills to the water. The attentive traveller reads the entire regional economy there: rice, fruit, construction sand, fish. No excursion is necessary; a chair on deck suffices, a hat against the already strong sun and a little curiosity. Guides aboard willingly identify cargoes in passing, and this observation game pleasantly occupies the morning.

My Tho: Gateway to the Delta

At the mouth, the My Tho region opens the delta proper. Depending on the programme, a stop allows exploration by sampan of Thoi Son Island's waterways, where one visits small family workshops: coconut sweets made by the ladle, apiaries whose honey you taste in tea, dragon-fruit orchards. These artisanal, simple and direct encounters wonderfully complete the morning's navigation. The children offer honey tea with disarming seriousness, the orchards groan with fruit of unknown shapes, and you return aboard with sticky hands and a light heart.

Cho Gao reminds us of a truth that cruises sometimes forget: the journey counts as much as the arrival. This brown waterway, without monument or viewpoint, tells more about Vietnam than many celebrated sites, because nothing there is staged. Some ships cross it at dusk, when the convoy lights come on one by one and horn calls answer each other in the darkness; the spectacle then merits delaying dinner. When the ship returns to the river and its width, engine noise subsides, and passengers keep the image of the painted eyes on the bows, wide open onto the water road.
