Both a delta town and the waterway bearing its name, linking Ho Chi Minh City's navigable network to the river branch that flows past My Tho. Cho Gao means rice market, and the canal earns the name well before daybreak.
Not in the usual sense: transiting the canal is the experience itself. No excursion is needed; all it takes is a deck chair, a hat against the already fierce sun and a little curiosity.
Generally early in the itinerary, in the first hours of the cruise. Many passengers settle on deck at dawn, and they are rewarded: the narrow canal puts the spectacle within earshot.
Hundreds of working boats each day: rice barges sunk to the gunwale, sand carriers, coconut convoys, tankers. The crews live aboard, and you catch a thousand domestic scenes, washing snapping in the wind, morning soup on a burner, children waving.
It is a tradition meant to keep evil spirits of the water away. The eyes are painted on either side of the bow, on almost every working boat in the delta, giving the procession an odd sense of being watched back.
Stilt houses, family landings, orchards and rice fields follow one another without a break. Tin roofs alternate with coconut canopies, a suspension bridge passes above the masts, a riverside market spills down to the water.
Rice, fruit, construction sand and fish: the region's four pillars go by as visible cargo. Guides aboard readily identify what passes, and this observation game happily fills the morning.
At the far end, the My Tho region opens the delta proper. Depending on the programme, a stop allows exploration by sampan of the creeks of Thoi Son island, where small family workshops are visited, starting with coconut candy.
The Vietnamese dong and Vietnamese. The canal transit involves no purchases, but the stops in the My Tho region run on cash: keep small denominations to hand.
December to April, the delta's dry season, with stable water levels and clearer mornings for watching from the deck. River traffic, for its part, has no low season.
