No. Nobody leaves the ship: Endicott Arm is a day of scenic cruising. There is no pier and no road for tens of kilometres, and the whole day plays out on deck.
About 80 kilometres southeast of Juneau, in Southeast Alaska. This glacial fjord of roughly fifty kilometres cuts into the mountains and lies within Tongass National Forest.
Granite walls polished by glaciation rising more than 600 metres, streaked with waterfalls dropping straight into the sea, blue-tinged icebergs stranded on the shoals, and at the head of the fjord the face of Dawes Glacier.
The glacier that closes Endicott Arm, its compressed face veined with deep blue. The ship stops at a respectful distance and turns slowly so every cabin gets the view.
That's the moment everyone waits for: a sharp crack, a column of ice toppling, the wave that follows and the rumble bouncing off the walls. Nothing is guaranteed, but the waiting is part of the show.
Harbour seals using the ice floes as nurseries, often with their pups. Mountain goats on grassy ledges, bald eagles and kittiwakes overhead, and humpback whales or orcas in the open water of the area.
In layers: air off the glacier chills the open decks sharply. Alternate between the open decks and the glass lounges to warm up without missing anything.
The ship enters early in the morning through Holkham Bay, where the first icebergs signal what's coming. Keep binoculars and camera to hand from dawn.
Some lines offer Zodiac outings to approach the glacier face, bookable on board. Ask early in the cruise — places are limited.
