Frequently Asked Questions
Depending on the vessel, at the Mainlände below the centre, or on the neighbouring canalized arm, from which a short shuttle reaches the town walls. Either way, the market square is a few minutes away.
The lazy loop the Main traces through the heart of the Franconian vineyard, on which the town sits. It gives the call its ruler-straight slopes, its steeples and that soft light for which the valley is known.
Carved in limewood five centuries ago by Tilman Riemenschneider, she was stolen in 1962 from her church among the vines and only returned to Volkach after a ransom was paid by the publisher of a major magazine. The affair made front pages across Germany.
A path rises gently through the vine plots, about 1.5 kilometres: allow some twenty minutes on foot. The reward is double, the Madonna of the Rosary finally back home and the panorama over the loop of the Main.
The town stretches between its two surviving gates, the Gaibacher Tor and the Sommeracher Tor, remnants of the medieval wall. Halfway along, the market square gathers the Renaissance town hall with its outside staircase, half-timbered façades and flower-decked oriels.
Ten minutes are enough from one gate to the other, but you will take far longer: the shopfronts, open courtyards and carved details hold you up. Plan on an hour of wandering instead.
Silvaner, which has ruled these slopes for centuries, supported by Müller-Thurgau. It is poured from the Bocksbeutel, the round flat bottle that has become the emblem of winegrowing Franconia, and ordered as a schoppen, a generous glass served without ceremony.
The hamlet of Astheim keeps a former charterhouse whose pale buildings reflect in the water; you reach it on foot across the bridge. Stronger walkers will aim instead for the Vogelsburg, overlooking the meander, where the view takes in the whole curve.
No, unless you climb to Maria im Weingarten or the Vogelsburg. The town itself is flat and compact, and a bench by the water is a perfectly honourable way to spend the end of a call.
The euro, with cash for the cellars and taverns. Autumn is the finest time: tractors loaded with grapes cross the square at a crawl and conversations start easily from table to table.
