Expedition ships anchor in the bay and land passengers by tender in the heart of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. It is the provincial capital of the archipelago, a quiet town where white taxis roll at walking pace and the school sits on the seafront.
Yes, literally. On the Puerto Baquerizo Moreno waterfront, seats are scarce: sea lions sleep on the steps, sprawl on the docks and slip under moored boats. In the evening the streetlights reveal whole families of marine mammals asleep between benches and skiffs.
At the interpretation centre, a short walk from the landing. Its open pavilions tell the volcanic birth of the islands, the arrival of species carried by currents, and the human story from whalers to settlers. You come out looking at everything else differently.
Frigatebird Hill, reached by a trail starting at the interpretation centre. Those large black birds glide above the ridge while the path reveals clear-water coves below, where you can slip in with mask and snorkel.
Three in town, one of which stays reserved for the sea lions, who gather there by the dozen in a chorus of grunts. The other two are open to swimming, and a curious sea lion sometimes comes to spin around the swimmers.
One of the only permanent freshwater bodies in the whole archipelago, set in an old crater in San Cristóbal's highlands and often capped with mist. Frigatebirds come there to drink and rinse their feathers on the fly.
Considerably, and it surprises most travellers. The road climbs through progressively greener vegetation zones, dotted with tiny farms and moss-hung trees. The contrast with the arid coast is striking.
A cleft rock rising nearly one hundred and fifty metres out of the ocean, northwest of San Cristóbal. Snorkelling excursions go there by boat: through the channel between the two walls pass sea turtles, rays and sharks harmless to swimmers.
Yes. Any outing beyond Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is made with an accredited national park guide, and marked trails are followed strictly. That is the price of the trust the animals extend to people.
A hat, water bottle and sun protection: the equatorial sun is unforgiving even under cloud. Closed shoes for the lava tracks, and a swimsuit under your clothes, since chances to get in the water turn up without warning. Businesses accept the US dollar, Ecuador's official currency.
