Frequently Asked Questions
A plain barrel set on the beach at Post Office Bay, covered in markings left by generations of sailors. Whalers invented it in 1793: you leave a card with no stamp, fish out one addressed near your home, and promise to deliver it by hand.
You sift through the pile looking for an address near home — many travellers leave with a delivery to make in Montreal or Laval — and leave your own card. Bring it already written, and something to note the addresses you take.
A wet landing on the Post Office Bay beach: bring sandals or water shoes. A national park guide is mandatory, trails are marked and group sizes are limited.
Because of olivine crystals, a volcanic mineral, which give the landing beach an olive-green cast. It is one of the archipelago's most talked-about surprises.
The trail skirts a brackish lagoon where Galápagos flamingos feed, pink against grey hills, before reaching a second beach of coral sand as fine as flour, where rays glide through the shorebreak.
December through May, on the coral-sand beach at Punta Cormorant. Nests are protected and the trail keeps its distance: you watch, you do not approach.
La Corona del Diablo, a collapsed volcanic cone rising as a ring of jagged reef opposite Punta Cormorant. It is one of the best-known snorkelling sites in the Galápagos: parrotfish, moray eels, whitetip reef sharks and sometimes playful sea lions.
No. The current runs through the flooded crater and dictates the route, so every pass differs from the last. Outings run in small supervised groups, but you need to be comfortable in open water.
Floreana was the first inhabited island in the archipelago. In the 1930s a German doctor devoted to natural living, an Austrian baroness with two lovers in tow, and a family of pioneers shared a few freshwater springs, until a series of never-explained disappearances that guides still call the Galápagos affair. About a hundred people live today at Puerto Velasco Ibarra.
Yes, in 1835 during the Beagle's passage. Floreana was one of four islands in the archipelago he explored, and the mockingbirds he collected there were among the clues that led him toward his theory of evolution.
