By cruise only. The island has no population and no facilities, and two visitor sites share the coast: Gardner Bay beach to the east and the Punta Suárez cliffs to the west. Many itineraries offer both in a single day.
Because it is the southernmost and one of the oldest, some four million years old, isolated from the rest by a stretch of ocean. Several of its residents exist nowhere else, not even on neighbouring islands.
Rocky, about three kilometres, and one of the richest in the national park. The landing is dry, near a small lighthouse. Sturdy closed shoes are necessary: the rock is uneven and there is no shade.
April to December. Virtually the entire world population of waved albatrosses breeds here: thousands of pairs court bill to bill in a fencing-like clatter, incubate their single egg, then launch from the cliffs that serve as a runway. In January and February the birds are at sea and cannot be seen.
The island's marine iguanas, which in season take on reds and greens found nowhere else in the archipelago. They are so numerous on the Punta Suárez trail that you literally step over them within the first few metres.
A blowhole that sends spray several metres above the rocks with every strong wave, along the Punta Suárez trail. It is one of the most photographed stops on the island.
A long beach of brilliant white coral sand on the east coast, where sea lions sleep by the dozen, indifferent to visitors walking freely along the water. The cheeky, endemic Española mockingbirds come to inspect bags.
Yes, around Gardner Islet and Tortuga Rock: colourful reef fish, rays and playful young sea lions spinning around swimmers. Sea turtles also cruise the bay.
Yes, and it is a conservation success. Reduced to about fifteen individuals in the twentieth century, the local giant tortoise has reclaimed its territory through a breeding programme concluded in 2020. The patriarch Diego, father of several hundred young, was released there after decades of service.
A naturalist guide is mandatory, trails are marked, and you keep two metres from wildlife even when it approaches you. Landings are by zodiac, dry at Punta Suárez and onto the beach at Gardner Bay.
