Description
At the Cruz del Cóndor lookout, you wait in silence, eyes on the void of the Colca Canyon. Then a silhouette rises on the warm air currents, three metres of wingspan, without a single wingbeat. This small-group tour, limited to 18 travellers, is part of La Collection and takes the time for moments like these, from the Pacific coast to the Amazon.
The journey begins in Lima, among colonial balconies and the galleries of Barranco, then heads down to Paracas, where sea lions lounge on the Ballestas Islands. Arequipa, the white city, opens the road to the Andes: vicuñas at the volcano pass, the Colca, then Lake Titicaca and its reed islands inhabited by the Uros. In Cusco, Inca walls still carry the Spanish churches. The Sacred Valley leads to Pisac, the Maras salt pans and Ollantaytambo, where the train climbs to Machu Picchu.
The trip ends in the Amazon, at a riverside lodge. You look for giant otters on Lake Sandoval and watch parrots come to peck at the clay in the morning. Three domestic flights spare you the long roads.
