The castle and its rose garden fill two hours, the climb to the Shepherd's Wall a good hour round trip, and the centre fits comfortably in between. If the boat stays longer, Bohemian Switzerland National Park is reachable by excursion.
A long Baroque silhouette set on a rock spur, guarding this strategic passage for close to a thousand years. You reach it by the Long Ride, a walled passage cut into the rock on a gentle slope. Inside: restored salons, a library and exhibits on the noble families who lived here, including the Thun-Hohensteins.
The finest view over Děčín: the castle on its rock, the river running off towards Germany, and the hills of Bohemian Switzerland on the horizon. It is a sandstone cliff topped by a small romantic-looking lookout with a terrace restaurant. A woodland trail climbs to it.

Yes. A family zoo occupies the wooded slopes at the foot of the Shepherd's Wall, and it is the favourite stop for passengers travelling with kids. The rock-cut Long Ride also appeals to younger visitors. The lookout trail stays steep, so judge it by age.
It is the best reason to extend the call. The neighbouring national park unrolls sandstone towers, cool gorges and deep forest, with villages where half-timbered houses huddle under the rock faces. The same massif continues into Germany as Saxon Switzerland, which the boat then sails through.
