Frequently Asked Questions

Usually along the bank, at the edge of Dunavska Gradina park, a long shaded garden following the river. The centre is a few minutes' walk from there.
The Danube park, the history museum, the Roman tomb and the Medzhidi Tabia fortress form a coherent route on foot or with a short ride. The Srebarna reserve requires an excursion and more time.
The town's old Roman name. In the first century the Romans built a fortified camp on this strategic bank, and the city that grew around it became an important post on the limes, the empire's fortified river frontier. A legion was garrisoned here for centuries; wall sections and foundations survive within the modern town.
A fourth-century Roman tomb whose frescoes have come through the centuries with startling freshness: the owner and his wife appear surrounded by servants, birds and plant motifs in colours still vivid. It is the town's most precious monument.
Opening hours are restricted to protect the paintings. Ask as soon as you arrive if this late-antique treasure appeals to you, since it justifies the call on its own and would be a shame to miss.
A mid-nineteenth-century Ottoman military work on a hill to the south overlooking the rooftops, with stone walls sunk behind their ditches. It is among the best-preserved parts of the Ottoman defensive system on the Danube; its casemates and inner courtyard are now a museum.
A UNESCO-listed nature reserve about fifteen kilometres west of Silistra. It protects a reed-fringed lake where the Dalmatian pelican nests, one of Europe's largest birds, with a visitor centre and observation trails.
The excavated remains of the old fortress that guarded the bank, set within a long shaded garden where locals walk with strollers and fishing rods under the plane trees. Benches facing the current, ice cream kiosks, chess games: Silistra reveals itself first at the level of daily life.
Yes. The riverside park is at the foot of the gangway with no transport to arrange, and the Srebarna reserve interests bird-minded children. The Roman tomb, with its restricted hours, suits improvised family visits less well.
Discreet on itineraries, it rewards those who take the time to walk down the gangway: two thousand years of history layered a few minutes from the river, without crowds and without staging.
